Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Queenstown town and lake
Driving: local
Settle in and take the town at its own pace. Ride the Skyline Gondola for the view over Lake Wakatipu, walk the lakefront, and eat well in the evening. An easy first day after travel.

Tip: Park at your accommodation and walk the town centre; it is compact and busy with traffic.
Day 2: Glenorchy day trip
Driving: approx. 45 minutes each way
Drive the Glenorchy road along the shore of Lake Wakatipu, one of the prettiest short drives in New Zealand. Stop at the lookouts, walk the Glenorchy lagoon boardwalk, and head up the Paradise road if conditions allow.

Stay: Queenstown.
Tip: The road is sealed to Glenorchy; beyond it turns to gravel. Check your rental agreement before the Paradise section.

Driving: approx. 20 to 40 minutes
A short drive to historic Arrowtown, all gold-rush cottages and autumn colour, then the Gibbston Valley cellar doors on the way. Time your day around your onward flight.

Queenstown is walkable, but a car makes the day trips easy and lets you set your own pace. The routes here are sealed; the gravel beyond Glenorchy is the one place to check your rental agreement.

- Is 3 days enough for Queenstown?
- Yes, for the town and the two best day trips. Three days covers Queenstown itself, a day to Glenorchy, and Arrowtown with the Gibbston wineries. Add a day if you want to fit a Milford Sound trip.
- What are the best day trips from Queenstown?
- Glenorchy along the lake road (about 45 minutes each way) is the standout. Arrowtown and the Gibbston Valley wineries are close and easy. Milford Sound is possible but a very long day, around 4 hours each way.
- Is the drive to Glenorchy worth it?
- Very much. The Glenorchy road hugs Lake Wakatipu beneath the mountains and is one of the prettiest short drives in the country. Allow time for the lookouts and Glenorchy itself.
- Can you do Milford Sound in a day from Queenstown?
- Yes, but it is around 8 hours of driving return plus time at the Sound, so it takes the whole day and then some. Many people stay a night in Te Anau instead. See can you drive to Milford Sound.
- Where do you pick up the car in Queenstown?

- Do you need a car in Queenstown?
- For the town itself you can walk, but a car makes the day trips to Glenorchy, Arrowtown and the wineries easy and lets you go on your own schedule.
- When is the best time to visit Queenstown?
- Autumn (March to May) brings golden colour and settled weather; winter (June to September) is ski season; summer is busiest. Each has its appeal, so choose by what you want to do.
- How much driving is involved?
- Not much. Day trips are short out-and-back drives, roughly 1 to 2 hours of driving on the busier days, less if you stay close to town.
