Every rental car agreement in New Zealand restricts where you can drive, and the restrictions vary wildly between companies. Some ban all unsealed roads. Some void your insurance the moment you leave the seal. A handful allow gravel. Almost none will tell you clearly on their website, which is why the standard advice is "check your rental agreement."
This guide is the clear answer. It covers the roads travellers actually ask about, what the market norm is for each, and what our own two rental brands allow: Dream Drives (sealed-road touring vehicles) and Jimny Rentals (gravel-capable Suzuki Jimnys, run by the same team). Where we say no, we tell you why. Where we say yes, we mean it.
Can you drive a rental car on gravel roads in New Zealand?
Most rental companies say no. The typical New Zealand rental agreement either bans unsealed roads outright or excludes insurance cover on them, with a short list of sealed-adjacent exceptions like the road into a campground.
Dream Drives is a sealed-road fleet. Our touring cars and the Queenstown V-Class are not permitted on gravel, full stop. We would rather tell you that here than in a damage claim.
Jimny Rentals takes the opposite approach. Jimnys are built for gravel, and the agreement allows any formed public road, sealed or unsealed, maintained by a council or government agency, driven at your risk and to the conditions. Three roads are excluded by our insurer no matter what: Skippers Canyon, the Nevis Road and Ninety Mile Beach. Off formed roads is never permitted: no beaches, no river crossings, no farm tracks.
Which vehicle for unsealed roads
Dream Drives runs a sealed-road fleet, so if your route takes in gravel the answer is a different vehicle rather than a different driving style. Jimny Rentals hires compact Suzuki Jimnys, and its agreement allows any formed public road, sealed or unsealed, maintained by a council or government agency. Skippers Canyon, the Nevis Road and Ninety Mile Beach stay excluded, and driving off formed roads is never permitted.

Can you drive a rental car to Skippers Canyon?
No, and this is one of the few roads where the answer is no from essentially every rental company in New Zealand, including both of ours. Insurers exclude Skippers Canyon Road by name. It is narrow, unfenced, carved into a cliff face, and has claimed enough vehicles that the exclusion is close to universal. If a rental operator tells you Skippers is fine, read their agreement very carefully.

Can you drive a rental car to Macetown?
No. Macetown is not on a maintained public road. Getting there means fording the Arrow River multiple times on an unmaintained track, and water crossings are excluded by every rental agreement we know of, including Jimny Rentals. Our rule is formed public roads only, and the Macetown track is neither formed nor maintained.

Can you drive a rental car on Ninety Mile Beach?
No. The beach is officially a road, but it is also officially a tide-dependent sand highway that eats vehicles, and rental insurers exclude it almost universally. It is one of Jimny Rentals' three named insurance exclusions, alongside Skippers Canyon and the Nevis Road, and Dream Drives vehicles are sealed-road only. Take one of the Cape Reinga bus tours that drive the beach; they run purpose-built vehicles and read the tides for a living.
What happens if you drive a rental car somewhere the agreement prohibits?
You are typically uninsured from the moment you do. That means the full cost of any damage, recovery and loss-of-use sits with you, and recovery from somewhere remote is not cheap. Rental operators also increasingly know where their vehicles go. The honest version of this page exists so you can pick an operator whose rules match your plans instead of gambling on not being noticed.
