Day 1
Cross the plains and climb toward Arthur’s Pass; the Otira Viaduct is a dramatic pause before the descent toward the coast.
Emerge at Hokitika with the Tasman close enough to taste the salt.
Stay: a boutique Hokitika base — driftwood beaches, artisan shops, and an early night before glacier country.
Day 2
Detour to Hokitika Gorge when conditions allow — turquoise water framed by dark bush is unforgettable.
Continue south to Franz Josef; short glacier-valley walks if weather permits.
Stay: Scenic Hotel Franz Josef — relax after twisting coastal kilometres.
Day 3
Dedicate the morning to glacier views or local walks; West Coast weather sets the pace.
If time and daylight allow, push north to Punakaiki’s pancake rocks — otherwise bank the stop for a longer itinerary variant.
