Day 1
Christchurch → Arthur’s Pass
Head west from Christchurch into the Waimakariri gorge — the transition from plains to mountains happens fast.
Arthur’s Pass village is a worthy stop: short walks, mountain air, and a taste of high-country scale before the long run south.
Stay overnight in the pass area or press on toward the West Coast side depending on your pace (book accommodation to match).
Day 2
Toward Queenstown
Continue south toward Queenstown via Haast Pass or your preferred inland link — check conditions and allow time for photographs and coffee.
Arrive in Queenstown with evening free to wander the lakefront or settle in at your hotel.
Stay: The Rees Hotel — lake views, firelight, and a soft landing after a big day of kilometres.
Day 3
Queenstown — ski or slow day
Choose The Remarkables or a deliberately slow recovery day: brunch, a short walk, or simply reading the ranges from a window.
Winter in Queenstown is as much about contrast as speed — balance adrenaline with unscheduled hours.
Second night at The Rees or equivalent; let the mountain weather dictate the mood.
Day 4
Queenstown → Arrowtown → Crown Range
Short hop to Arrowtown — laneways, heritage trees, winter colour without the resort bustle.
Cross the Crown Range toward Wānaka views; the lookout rewards everyone who stops (safely).
Stay: Millbrook Resort — spread out, spa if you wish, and sleep knowing the long run home is tomorrow.
Day 5
Arrowtown / Cromwell → Christchurch
Trace the Kawarau Gorge then head east across the plains — a different mood from Day 1, with the trip’s story complete.
Return the vehicle in Christchurch — unhurried handover, then flights or onward plans on your terms.
