Day 1
Christchurch → Lake Tekapo
Leave Christchurch when you are ready — inland across the plains toward the Mackenzie, with the Southern Alps gradually filling the windscreen.
Pause in Fairlie for coffee or a stretch; the road to Tekapo rewards unhurried pacing.
Arrive at Tekapo for lakeside wandering and, after dark, some of the clearest stargazing in the country.
Stay: Lake Tekapo Lodge — settle in, breathe cold alpine air, and plan Day 2 over a quiet dinner.
Day 2
Lake Tekapo → Aoraki/Mount Cook
Follow the turquoise edge of the lake, then Lake Pūkaki toward Aoraki/Mount Cook — a drive that feels shorter than it is because the views refuse to let you rush.
Walk short glacier-valley tracks if conditions allow; the Tasman Glacier terminal lake is a humbling stop.
Stay: The Hermitage — wake among giants, with sunset and sunrise competing for attention.
Day 3
Mount Cook → Twizel & Ōhau
Descend toward Twizel — a handy base for Ōhau Snow Fields if you want time on the snow without the circus.
Twizel itself is unhurried: cafés, wide skies, and views back toward the main divide.
Stay: Pépins at Twizel — rest well; tomorrow is a full inland run home.
Day 4
Twizel → Christchurch
Return north through familiar passes and plains with a camera roll full of ridges and winter light.
Hand back in Christchurch city or airport — unforced, on your schedule (subject to your booking).
