Quick answer
A great 10-day Queenstown itinerary bases you in Queenstown and loops out to Glenorchy, Arrowtown, Wanaka, Cromwell wine country and Milford Sound — with buffer days for activities and rest. Most days are short drives (25 minutes to 2 hours); the Milford leg is the longest and is best done with an overnight in Te Anau.

Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Queenstown
Driving: Airport transfer / settle in
Pick up your car and settle into Queenstown. Ride the Skyline Gondola for the classic view over Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables, walk the lakefront, and book any activities for the days ahead.
Stay: Queenstown
Day 2: Glenorchy day trip
Driving: ~45 min each way
One of New Zealand’s great short drives, hugging the lake to Glenorchy and the Paradise valley — pure Middle-earth scenery. Easy walks, a lagoon boardwalk, and jet-boat or horse-trek options.
Stay: Queenstown
Day 3: Arrowtown & Gibbston
Driving: ~25 min
Historic gold-mining Arrowtown, then the Gibbston wine valley and the Kawarau bungy bridge. Cellar doors, the river trail, and a relaxed afternoon (nominate a driver for tastings).
Stay: Queenstown
Day 4: Queenstown to Te Anau
Driving: ~2 hours
Head to Te Anau, gateway to Fiordland, to set up the Milford leg. Lakeside town, optional glowworm caves, and an early night before the big drive.
Stay: Te Anau
Day 5: Milford Sound & back to Queenstown
Driving: ~2 hours to Milford, then ~4 hours to Queenstown
The Milford Road is one of the world’s great drives — Mirror Lakes, the Chasm, and towering peaks. Cruise the sound, then return via Te Anau to Queenstown.
Stay: Queenstown
Day 6: Queenstown to Wanaka
Driving: ~1 hour via the Crown Range
Climb the Crown Range — New Zealand’s highest sealed road — to Wanaka. Lakefront, #ThatWanakaTree, and an easy walk or a bigger hike if you’re keen. A quieter, relaxed base.
Stay: Wanaka
Day 7: Wanaka & Cromwell wine country
Driving: ~1.5 hours loop
A Wanaka morning, then loop through Cromwell and the Bannockburn wineries on Lake Dunstan — fruit stalls in season and Central Otago pinot country — back toward Queenstown.
Stay: Queenstown
Day 8: Queenstown adventure day
Driving: Minimal
Your pick: jet boat, bungy, a lake cruise to Walter Peak, mountain biking, or a scenic flight. Or simply slow down — cafés, viewpoints, and the lakefront.
Stay: Queenstown
Day 9: Buffer / rest day
Driving: Optional short trips
A flex day to catch up on anything you missed, revisit a favourite spot, or rest before departure. Good for weather backup or a second Glenorchy or Arrowtown visit.
Stay: Queenstown
Day 10: Departure
Driving: To airport or onward
Return your car in Queenstown, or continue your trip — Christchurch is a scenic 6–7 hour drive via the Lindis Pass and Lake Tekapo if you’re looping the South Island.
Short on time? Drop the buffer day and the Cromwell loop for a tight 8-day version. Want more? Add a night in Wanaka or extend the Milford leg with a Fiordland walk.

Getting around: why self-drive
Queenstown is made for self-driving. The best of this itinerary — Glenorchy, the Crown Range, the Milford Road — is the driving, and a comfortable car lets you set your own pace and stop wherever the view demands it. Coach tours can’t do that.

Frequently asked questions
- Is 10 days enough for Queenstown?
- Yes — 10 days lets you base in Queenstown and take unhurried day trips to Glenorchy, Arrowtown, Wanaka, Cromwell wine country and Milford Sound, with buffer time for weather and rest. It’s a comfortable, unrushed pace.
- What’s the best 10-day Queenstown itinerary?
- Base in Queenstown, then loop out to Glenorchy, Arrowtown and Gibbston, an overnight to Te Anau for Milford Sound, the Crown Range to Wanaka, and Cromwell wine country — with a couple of buffer days for activities and rest.
- Can you do Milford Sound from Queenstown in a day?
- You can, but it’s a very long day (about 4 hours each way). We recommend an overnight in Te Anau so the Milford Road and cruise are relaxed rather than rushed.
- How much driving is there each day?
- Most days are short — 25 minutes to 2 hours — because you’re based in Queenstown. The Milford leg is the longest. Several days have minimal driving, which is why 10 days feels relaxed.
- When is the best time to visit Queenstown?
- Summer (Dec–Feb) for long days and lake weather; autumn (Mar–May) for golden colour and fewer crowds; winter (Jun–Aug) for snow and skiing, with chains where required on alpine roads. Each season suits this itinerary.
- Do I need a 4WD for this itinerary?
- No. The routes are sealed and fine in a comfortable 2WD. In winter, check NZTA and carry chains for the Crown Range and Milford Road. Off-road driving is not permitted on rental vehicles.
- Why self-drive rather than tours?
- Self-driving gives you the freedom to set your own pace, stop for photos, and reach quieter spots that coach tours skip. With a comfortable hire car, the drives — Glenorchy, the Crown Range, the Milford Road — become highlights in themselves.
