A Warrant of Fitness (WOF) is New Zealand’s regular safety check for vehicles. This guide explains what it covers and how often it’s required by vehicle age — plus what it means when you hire a car (our fleet is always kept current).
A Warrant of Fitness (WOF) is New Zealand’s regular safety check for vehicles. This guide explains what it covers and how often it’s required by vehicle age — plus what it means when you hire a car (our fleet is always kept current).
A Warrant of Fitness is a periodic inspection that confirms a vehicle meets New Zealand’s minimum safety standards — brakes, tyres, lights, steering, structure and more. Most light vehicles need one on a set schedule, and it’s illegal to drive on the road with an expired WOF. If you’re hiring a car, you don’t need to think about it: rental vehicles are legally required to hold a current WOF, and ours always do.
The inspection checks the safety-critical parts of the vehicle: brakes, tyres and wheels, lights and indicators, steering and suspension, windscreen and wipers, seatbelts, doors, mirrors, and the body structure for rust or damage. It is a safety check, not a mechanical service — passing a WOF doesn’t guarantee the car is fault-free, only that it meets the road-safety minimum on the day.
How often a vehicle needs a WOF depends on its age. A brand-new vehicle doesn’t need its first WOF until it’s three years old. After that, vehicles first registered on or after 1 January 2000 are on an annual (12-month) cycle, while vehicles first registered before 2000 need one every six months. The inspection fee isn’t set by the government — each authorised provider sets its own price, so it’s worth comparing. For the authoritative current rules, check NZTA (Waka Kotahi).
When you hire with us, the WOF is our responsibility, not yours. Every vehicle in our fleet is maintained and kept with a current Warrant of Fitness, so you can focus on the drive. If a warrant were ever due mid-hire, we manage it — you’ll always be in a road-legal, safety-checked car.
Road conditions
Check NZTA for current road conditions and closures before long drives—especially in winter or after heavy rain.
Visitor tip
Allow extra time for rest and photo stops. Drive to conditions and never push through fatigue—pull over and rest.
