What does a South Island road trip actually cost to drive? This guide breaks down the real driving costs — fuel by route, whether there are any toll roads, EV charging, and simple ways to keep the budget down — so you can plan with confidence.
The main driving cost on a South Island road trip is fuel — how much depends on your route, your vehicle’s economy, and current pump prices. There are no toll roads on the South Island, so you can plan without factoring tolls in. Budget mainly for fuel (or EV charging), plus the usual accommodation, food and activities. Fuel prices change, so treat the figures below as estimates and check current prices before you go.
A rough fuel estimate is: distance ÷ 100 × your car’s litres-per-100km × the current price per litre. As a guide, the classic legs are Christchurch to Queenstown (~550 km), Christchurch to Lake Tekapo (~227 km), and Queenstown to Wanaka (~70 km). Multiply the distance by your vehicle’s economy and the current fuel price to estimate each leg. A full Christchurch-loop road trip covers well over 1,500 km, so fuel is the cost worth planning around.
New Zealand has only a small number of toll roads, and all of them are in the North Island. There are no toll roads on the South Island, so a South Island road trip has no tolls to budget for or pay online. You can plan your route purely around distance, time and stops.
If you’re touring in an electric car, “fuel” becomes charging. Public fast-charging is widely available on the main South Island routes, and charging is typically cheaper per kilometre than petrol or diesel, especially if you can top up overnight at your accommodation. Plan longer legs (like the West Coast and the passes) around charger locations. See our EV road trip guide for the charging network and range-friendly routes.
Beyond fuel, budget for accommodation, food, and activities — these usually outweigh the driving cost. To keep the driving budget down: choose an economical or electric vehicle, drive smoothly to save fuel, fill up in larger towns where fuel is often cheaper, and group your activities by region to avoid backtracking. Booking your vehicle and accommodation ahead in peak season also avoids last-minute premiums.

Check NZTA for current road conditions and closures before long drives—especially in winter or after heavy rain.
Visitor tip
Allow extra time for rest and photo stops. Drive to conditions and never push through fatigue—pull over and rest.
