The highest pass across the Southern Alps links Christchurch to the West Coast. Dramatic alpine driving, mountain views, and one of the South Island's most memorable routes. Here's what to do and how to drive it in style.
Arthur's Pass is the highest pass across the Southern Alps and the main route between Christchurch and the West Coast. The village is small; the scenery is anything but. Alpine landscapes, the famous Otira Viaduct, and short walks to waterfalls and viewpoints make it a standout stop for South Island travellers.
The drive itself is the draw: mountain vistas, kea at the village, and the engineering feat of the viaduct. Whether you're crossing to Greymouth or making a day trip from Christchurch, it's one of the most dramatic routes on the island.
Alpine driving, national park scenery, and a route that feels like the heart of the South Island.
Short walk from the village to a dramatic 131 m waterfall. About 1 hour return; steps and path. A must-do stop.
The pass itself is the attraction. Allow 2–3 hours Christchurch–Arthur's Pass; add time for stops and photos.
Small village with cafés and services. Kea are often seen here. Do not feed them; they are protected.
The viaduct on the western side is an impressive piece of engineering. Pull over at designated areas for views.
Several DOC tracks for different fitness levels. Check DOC for conditions; some are seasonal or weather-dependent.
