South Island Road Trip: The Best 7-Day Itinerary from Christchurch

Duration7 days
Start / EndChristchurch
Total distance~1,400km
Best carTesla Model Y (summer/autumn) or Range Rover Sport (winter)
Best seasonAutumn (Mar–May)

One week from Christchurch lets you stitch together the “greatest hits” without pretending you’ve seen the whole island. This loop favours lakes, a taste of Aoraki country, Wanaka’s calmer pace, Queenstown’s energy, then the Kaikōura coast before you hand the keys back. Distances are real — especially day six — so we’ve been blunt about where the long haul sits. For charging notes on the EV version, keep our EV guide open next to this tab, and check booking availability when the outline fits your dates.

Day 1 — Christchurch → Lake Tekapo (225km, ~2.5 hrs)

Collect the car, aim south on SH1. Rakaia Gorge if you want a scenic detour; Geraldine for lunch. Arrive Tekapo mid-afternoon — Church of the Good Shepherd, lakeside walk, Tekapo Springs if you’ve booked. Dark sky stargazing if it’s clear. Overnight Tekapo; EV drivers should prioritise accommodation charging tonight.

Day 2 — Lake Tekapo → Mount Cook → Twizel (130km, ~2.5 hrs with stops)

Morning at Lake Pukaki — non-negotiable photo stop. Detour to Aoraki/Mt Cook village; the Hooker Valley Track is a classic full morning (allow ~3 hours return). Note: partial closures happen for maintenance — check NZTA and DOC notices for your dates. Stay in Twizel for better value than the village and a shorter run tomorrow toward Wanaka.

Day 3 — Twizel → Wanaka (150km, ~2 hrs)

Over Lindis Pass — quick viewpoint. Optional stop at Albert Town before Wanaka. Wanaka is quieter than Queenstown: lakefront stroll, or Roys Peak if you’re fit (long, steep day hike — don’t underestimate it). Overnight Wanaka.

Day 4 — Wanaka → Queenstown (70km, ~1 hr via Crown Range)

Take the Crown Range — highest sealed road in NZ, big views. Arrowtown on the way in if you skipped similar stops earlier. Queenstown: treat this as a lighter day — you’ve earned a meal and a lake wander rather than packing in more kms.

Day 5 — Queenstown

Options: Glenorchy road (~45 minutes each way, stunning), Milford Sound coach or self-drive only if you accept a massive day, or catch up on Arrowtown if you missed it. Keep winter conditions in mind on the Crown if you’re moving on tomorrow.

Day 6 — Queenstown → Kaikōura (~500km, ~5.5 hrs)

Longest driving day — trade-off for looping back to Christchurch. Break at Omarama (~1.5 hrs from Queenstown). You’ll pass Tekapo again; different light, still worth a look. Push north to Kaikōura for evening. EV: charge Omarama, Tekapo if needed; Kaikōura has a Tesla Supercharger (plus ChargeNet and others) — easy top-up when you arrive from the south. Plan the big legs before you leave Queenstown.

Day 7 — Kaikōura → Christchurch (183km, ~2 hrs)

Morning: Peninsula Walkway (seals, views) or whale watching tour if you booked ahead. Drive back to Christchurch and return the car. If you’re considering this loop in a Tesla, the week works in summer/autumn with disciplined charging; winter alpine legs tilt us toward a Range Rover Sport.

Which car for this trip?

Tesla Model Y: Roughly NZ$350–400 saved on fuel versus a thirsty SUV over ~1,400km at typical prices — your mileage varies with power rates and driving style. Infrastructure on this loop is fine if you’re not skipping overnight top-ups.

Range Rover Sport: Winter confidence, chains when needed, no charger hunting — worth the premium for some families and ski-season timing.

FAQ

Is 7 days enough for the South Island?
Seven days is enough to see the highlights — Tekapo, Mount Cook, Wanaka, Queenstown, and Kaikōura. You won’t see everything (Milford Sound, the West Coast, and Dunedin deserve more time) but it’s a genuinely satisfying loop.
Should I rent a car or campervan for a South Island road trip?
If comfort matters, a car plus booked accommodation is usually a better experience than a campervan. Freedom camping rules have tightened — a premium hire and motels/Airbnbs is simpler for most visitors.
What is the hardest day of driving on this itinerary?
Day 6 (Queenstown to Kaikōura, ~500km) is the longest. Break it at Omarama. If you’d rather avoid a big day, shorten Queenstown time or fly one-way back from Queenstown instead of looping.
